Dr Karen Ayres took us on a leadership journey like no leadership course / workshop I have been on before.   The two days the Fellows spent reflecting on their lives and what their past highs and lows mean for their future were, I think, invaluable for all. Let’s just say that what I thought I would be doing when I got back from Boston and what I will be doing are now completely different.   And not only was it personally valuable, it was also hugely valuable for the group â€" it brought us all closer together. There is nothing like sharing your deepest fears or greatest hopes and dreams with people you have known for only a few weeks to really break the ice. Over the two days, Karen encouraged the group to share poems, songs or quotes that mean something to them as a leader. Little did I know that my choice of “Stand by Me” by Ben E King would result in an impromptu sing-a-long!   MIT Media Lab Without doubt the learnings from the teaching at Babson are invaluable but the Fellows are also encouraged to soak up the entrepreneurial attitude of Bostonians. With this in mind, I spent one Thursday morning attending a HUB week event at MIT. HUB week is a weeklong series of events and experiences, taking place all throughout Greater Boston and is a collaboration between The Boston Globe, MIT, MGH and Harvard University.   HUB week encourages people in the Boston community to interact with artists, scientists and technologists to discuss ideas and foster innovation. The event I attended was a tour of the Media Lab at MIT where more than 25 research groups work on hundreds of research projects. John Werner, the organiser of the event and our guide for the morning, is the Head of Innovation and New Ventures for the Camera Culture Group and the founder of Ideas in Action, a non-profit connecting people around the world to inspire and set ideas into actions throughout their communities.   The event was inspiring â€" learning about the world-changing research ranging from digital approaches for treating neurological disorders to stackable, electric cars for sustainable cities, to advanced imaging technologies that can “see around the corner”. I am now trying to encourage John to speak at one of the Fellows’ ‘lunchlearns’, which take place between classes at Babson â€" another way that Babson / the Saltire Foundation encourages Fellows to learn. What better way to learn than from the people who have been there and done it?       Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be out and about a lot more, visiting companies in and around Greater Boston before we fly to San Francisco. Again, all part of the learning journey! The Saltire Foundation is an independent charity which was formed in 2009. The initiative hones the commercial and entrepreneurial skills of Scotland's future leadership talent to provide the next generation of leaders.   Eden Scott has been a Ruby Corporate Partner to the Saltire Foundation since 2013, assisting with the aquisition and assessment strategies for each intake.
